The 18th/19th century American farm was a largely self-sufficient enterprise and the backbone of the fledgling country’s early agrarian economy. Fields were cleared and the stones and timber removed were used to construct fencing and enclosures. Small outbuildings and sturdy homes were built with the abundant timber felled from the surrounding forests.
